Therapeutic Indications
Ylang Ylang is a tall tropical tree that can reach 20 meters in height with large tender fragrant flowers. The flowers can be pink, mauve or yellow. The yellow flowers are considered best for the extraction of the essential oil. The aroma is sweet,
floral, exotic and heavy. This tree is native to tropical Asia, especially Indonesia and the Philippines. The oil is produced mainly by Madagascar, Reunion and the Comoro Islands.
Ylang ylang oil is distilled from the early morning, fresh-picked flowers of the cananga tree. The distillation process is interrupted at various points and the oil accumulated is removed. The first oil to be drawn off
is the highest quality and is graded "extra." Ylang ylang extra has an intense floral, sweet, jasmine-like, almost narcotic aroma. Pure-Li Natural Ylang Ylang Oil is the finest grade Ylang Ylang Oil.
Known in the Philippines and Indonesia as the 'flower of flowers', these erotic blossoms are spread over the beds of island newly-weds to heighten their honeymoon and lull first-night nerves. The Molucca Islands make it
into an ointment with cucuma flowers and coconut oil for cosmetic and hair care, skin problems and to prevent fever and fight infections. In the Victorian age the oil was used as a hair treatment. Due to its stimulating effect on the scalp it encouraged
hair growth. It was also used to sooth insect bites and believed to have an effect on the cardiac and respiratory systems.
Therapeutically it is used for acne, hair growth, hair rinses, insect bites, irritated and oily skin, and general skin care. It is also used for high blood pressure, abnormally fast breathing, depression, insomnia;
nervous tension and stress-related disorders.
Commercially, it is used as a fragrance ingredient and fixative for soaps, cosmetics and perfumes. It is a flavouring ingredient mainly in alcoholic beverages and soft drinks, fruit flavours and desserts.
Storage
Ylang Ylang oil should be stored in a cool, dry area until it is used. Once opened, refrigeration and tightly closing the cap will prolong its shelf life.
