Therapeutic Indications
Thyme is a perennial evergreen shrub that grows up to 45 centimeters high with a woody root and an upright stem. It has small gray green, oval, aromatic leaves and pale purple or white flowers. This has a rather sweet and strongly herbal fragrance. This plant is native to Spain and the Mediterranean. Now it is found throughout Asia Minor, Algeria, Turkey, Tunisia, Israel, USA, Russia, China and central Europe. The oil is mainly produced in Spain but also in France, Israel, Greece, Morocco, Algeria, Germany and the USA.

Traditionally, this was one of the earliest medicinal plants used in the Mediterranean region. It was used as part of the embalming process by the ancient Egyptians. The Greeks used it to fumigate against infectious illness. The name has been traced back to the Greek "thymos" which means "to perfume". It is also a well known culinary herb and was used for the preservation of meat. It has a wide range of uses in the herbal arena, but the main uses are for respiratory problems, digestive problems and for the prevention and treatment of infection. The British Herbal Pharmacopoeia lists uses for dyspepsia chronic gastritis, bronchitis, asthma, children’s diarrhoea, laryngitis, tonsillitis and enuresis in children.

Therapeutically thyme oil is used for abscess, acne, bruises, burns, cuts, eczema, insect bites, lice, gum infections, and oily skin. It is also helpful for arthritis, cellulitis, gout, muscular aches and pains, obesity, poor circulation, rheumatism, sprains, and sports injuries. Other problems that benefit from this are asthma, bronchitis, catarrh, coughs, sore throat, and tonsillitis. Headaches, insomnia, and stress-related complaints have been helped when thyme is used, as has diarrhea and flatulence.

Thyme oil should be stored in a cool, dry area until it is used. Once opened, refrigeration and tightly closing the cap will prolong its shelf life.
