Therapeutic Indications
Tangerine is a small evergreen tree that can reach up to 6 meters. It has glossy leaves, fragrant flowers and produces a fleshy fruit. The scent is one that is sweet, light and tangy. It is native to southern China and the Far East. It was brought to Europe in the 1800's and to America as the mandarin but later it was renamed the tangerine. The tangerine is produced mainly in Texas, Florida, California and Guinea.

Traditionally, the mandarin was a gift to the Mandarins of China. In France it was a safe remedy for childhood indigestion, and also for the elderly since it helps strengthen the digestion and the liver.

Therapeutically it is used for acne, congested and oily skin, scar, spots, stretch marks and as a toner. It is also helpful in fluid retention, obesity, digestive problems, hiccough, and intestinal problems. Insomnia, nervous tension and restlessness have also benefited from its use. It is often used for children and pregnant women and is used in combination with other citrus oils for its synergistic effect.

Commercially, this oil is used in soaps, cosmetics, perfumes and colognes. It is used as a flavouring agent in sweet, soft drinks and liqueurs.

Storage
Tangerine oil should be stored in a cool, dry area until it is used. Once opened, refrigeration and tightly closing the cap will prolong its shelf life.

Usage
Digestive:
Tangerine is an excellent gentle treatment for colic, wind, and tummy upsets. Combine a few drops with 25ml of a carrier oil and gently massage the abdomen in a clockwise direction. If digestive symptoms persist, seek medical advice.

Strech Marks: Blend Tangerine oil with Sweet Almond oil and Wheat Germ oil to create a strech mark preventative and repair blend. This blend is particularly useful during pregnancy. Massage the abdomen, buttocks and thighs from the fourth month of pregnancy onwards to keep skin supple and prevent stretch marks.

Weakness: Tangerie can lighten the load when convalescing, feeling fragile or in the lead up to menstruation; use a few drops in a vapourizer or enjoy an cheery therapeutic bath. Use only as directed and consult a health care professional if menstrual symptoms persist.
