Therapeutic Indications
Spearmint has bright green, lance-shaped, sharply toothed leaves, quickly spreading underground runners and pink or lilac flowers in slender cylindrical spikes, with a fragrance similar to the scent of peppermint but sweeter.

This plant originally native to the Mediterranean region, is now common throughout Europe, western Asia and the Middle East and the USA, where it has become a very popular flavoring. The oil is produced in the Midwest USA, Hungary, Spain, Yugoslavia, and China.

Traditionally, this is valued worldwide as a culinary herb. It was used by the ancient Greeks as a restorative and to scent their bath water. The distilled water is used to relieve hiccough, colic, nausea, indigestion and flatulence. It was also used externally applied to the temples to ease headaches.

Therapeutically, the properties of spearmint oil are close to those of peppermint oil but its effects are less powerful, making it more suited to use for children. It is used to treat acne, dermatitis, asthma, bronchitis, catarrh, and sinus. It has been found to be helpful in colic, dyspepsia, flatulence, nausea, and vomiting. Other uses for spearmint are for treatment of colds, fevers and flu as well as fatigue, headache, migraine, nervous strain, and stress.

Commercially, this is used as a fragrance component mainly in soaps and colognes. It is also used as a flavour ingredient in a wide range of products including toothpaste, chewing gum, sweet alcoholic beverages and soft drinks.

Storage
Spearmint oil should be stored in a cool, dry area until it is used. Once opened, refrigeration and tightly closing the cap will prolong its shelf life.

Usage
Stomach Acid & Heartburn:
Spearmint's dynamic, zesty scent excites the digestive juices. For children it's a gentler and more pleasant tasting antacid alternative to Peppermint, taken internally, 1 drop in a glass of water or on brown sugar or honey. If symptoms persist, see a qualified health practitioner.

Nausea, Indigestion & Colic: For temporary relief use spearmint oil in a vaporizer or gently massage the abdomen in a clockwise direction with a massage oil blend. If symptoms persist, see a qualified health practitioner.

Motion Sickness & Hangover: Light and lively spearmint oil makes an effective emergency treatment providing short term relief. Use in a vaporizer or direct inhalation. Keep a small spray bottle handy as a traveling companion.

Lethargy: Spearmint oil is energizing to the mind and body. Use in a therapeutic bath for its refreshing effect.

Dirty Pores: Use a spearmint steam inhalation to help cleanse and refine pores.

Blends With
Basil oil, Grapefruit oil, Rosemary oil
