Therapeutic Indications
This shrubby evergreen bush will grow up to 2 meters high with silvery green, needle shaped leaves and pale blue flowers. The whole plant is very aromatic with a strong, clear, penetrating and refreshing herbal fragrance. It is native to the Mediterranean region and is now cultivated worldwide. The main oil producing countries are France, Spain and Tunisia.

Traditionally, this plant has been regarded as sacred in many civilizations. It is one of the earliest plants to be used for food, medicine and magic. Sprigs of rosemary were burnt at shrines in ancient Greece. In the Middle Ages it was used to drive away the evil spirits and as protection against the plague and infections. It was used for a wide range of problems including respiratory and circulatory disorders, liver congestion, digestive and rheumatic pain, skin and hair problems. Currently the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia states that for depressive conditions with general debility and indications of cardiovascular weakness, rosemary is beneficial.

Therapeutically it is used for dandruff, acne, dermatitis, eczema, greasy hair, insect repellent, promotes hair growth, stimulates scalp, lice and varicose veins. It is also employed to aid fluid retention, poor circulation, rheumatism, asthma, bronchitis and whooping cough. It is of benefit in treating colitis, flatulence, jaundice, colds, flu, infections, headaches, mental fatigue, nervous exhaustion and stress-related disorders.

Commercially, this is used in soaps, detergents, cosmetics, household sprays, perfumes and colognes. It is also used as a masking agent. The food industry uses this in many different ways, especially in meat products, as well as alcoholic beverages and soft drinks. Rosemary is a source of natural anti-oxidants.
