Therapeutic Indications
Horehound was first employed in ancient Roman doctors, who recommended it as a therapy for coughs and other respiratory ailments. Nicholas Culpeper, the seventeenth-century English pharmacist, commented that it
was helpful for a cough and was also useful in expectorating stubborn phlegm from the lungs. Similarly, American physicians of the nineteenth century remarked on its value as a medicinal plant not only for cough and asthma but also in menstrual
complaints.
Horehound is a valuable plant in the treatment of bronchitis where there is a non-productive cough. It combines the action of relaxing the smooth muscles of the bronchus whilst promoting mucus production and thus
expectoration. It is used with benefit in the treatment of whooping cough. The bitter action stimulates the flow and secretion of bile from the gall-bladder, aiding digestion. Horehound is used externally to promote the healing of wounds. Horehound is a
common ingredient in pharmaceutical and natural cough syrups and cough candies.

Horehound Herb should be stored tightly sealed in a cool, dry area until it is required.
