Therapeutic Indications
The cultivated grapefruit tree grows to 10 meters with shiny leaves and large yellow fruits believed to have derived from the shaddock. The aroma from this oil is sweet, sharp and very refreshing. It is native to tropical Asia and the West Indies. It is
now cultivated in California, Florida, Brazil and Israel. The main producer of the oil is California.
Traditionally, it is a citrus species and is high in Vitamin C, which is valuable as protection against infection.
Therapeutically grapefruit is used for acne, congested and oily skin, promotes hair growth, and is a skin toner. It is helpful in cellulitis, exercise preparation, muscle fatigue, obesity, stiffness and water retention.
It is beneficial in treating chills, colds, flu, depression, headaches, and nervous exhaustion.
Commercially, grapefruit is used as a fragrance for soaps, detergents, cosmetics and perfumes. It is used a great deal in desserts, soft drinks, alcoholic and carbonated beverages for both its fragrance and
flavour.
Storage
Grapefruit oil should be stored in a cool, dry area until it is used. Once opened, refrigeration and tightly closing the cap will prolong its shelf life.
Usage
Cellulite: Full-bodied, mellow, bittersweet Grapefruit has a clarifying, cleansing effect in the treatment of Cellulite; use in a massage oil blend.
Oily Skin: A steam inhalation brings out its astringent action, toning puffy facial tissue and tightening oily, enlarged pores.
Fluid Retention & Bloating: This oil helps maintain the body's waste disposal unit, assisting the break down and dispersal of unwanted accumulations. Grapefruit is an
excellent cleanser making it the perfect massage oil blend ingredient for massaging the buttock and thigh area; use firm, upward strokes towards the heart to assist the body's natural elimination. If fluid retention persists seek medical
advice.
Coughs, Colds & Flu: Grapefruit provides pleasant temporary relief of the symptoms of bronchial coughs, colds and flu; use in a vaporizer, in a steam inhalation, or make
a massage oil blend and rub into the chest, throat and back.
