The Skinny on Ephedra (Ma Huang)
by: Joel Thuna
Ephedra, often referred to by the Chinese name Ma Huang, has received a great deal of conflicting press coverage in the past several years
Many recognize ephedra to be one of the World's oldest medicines. It has been prescribed for more than 3000 years to treat coughs, colds, inflammations, headaches, hayfever, asthma, and fevers.
This small, spiny shrub effectively stimulates the central nervous and cardiovascular systems. It increases metabolic rate and blood pressure, suppresses appetite, opens bronchial passages by relieving spasms in this tissue, and stimulates the
heart.
Ephedra's traditional use was mainly to treat bronchial conditions. It was often used during allergic reactions due to its beneficial effect on the bronchial system. Today, pseudoephedrine, a synthetic form of ephedra, is a common ingredient in over
the counter allergy medications.
Preliminary investigations indicate ephedra may help smokers quit the nasty habit by reducing nicotine cravings. Research has also confirmed the herb's ability to soothe and relieve inflamed tissues.
Today, many people are using ephedra as a weight loss aide because it elevates their metabolic rate. This enhances the individual's energy levels, allowing for more exercise and promoting the desired weight loss. Dieters also benefit from the appetite
suppressant properties of ephedra.
These factors work together to increase the rate of weight lost. Constituents in this plant are also capable of effectively reducing blood sugar levels.
Ephedra stimulates fat loss by activating thermogenesis - the fat-burning process - in brown adipose tissue and enhancing energy by stimulating adrenaline secretion. Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is tissue that actually burns off excess dietary calories.
When BAT fails, the body stores excess calories as body fat. Once activated, BAT reduces the number of calories that will be stored.
When used properly, ephedra is safe and effective. If used irresponsibly, ephedra can be dangerous. Long-term consumption of high doses is unhealthy and toxic, especially to the adrenal glands, nervous system and heart. Safe, long-term consumption of
low doses of properly combined ephedra, caffeine (from natural sources) and aspirin causes accelerated fat loss through BAT stimulation, without significant adrenal activation.
Do not use Ephedra if you have high blood pressure, high pressure in the eyes (glaucoma), weakened blood vessels in the brain, prostate cancer, an overactive adrenal gland, or a thyroid disorder. In general, avoid ephedra if you have any condition that
makes you anxious or restless.
Ephedra should not be taken by children under 18 unless advised by a qualified health practitioner. As with many stimulating herbs, consult a qualified health practitioner before using ephedra if you are taking any other medications.
