Therapeutic Indications
This calming annual plant is traditionally used as a domestic spice. It is native to Egypt and Greece, but is cultivated in parts of France, India, China, North Africa, Mexico, Spain and Italy as well.

Growing less than a meter in height, with delicate leaves and flowers, the herb's distinct pungent odour reminds one of licorice. The essential oil produced is colourless to pale yellow, and is used for the treatment of upper respiratory problems, as a digestive stimulant, diuretic, expectorant, aid in breast milk production and has a regulatory effect on the reproductive system. Aniseed is used in aromatherapy to aid in muscular aches and pains. Aniseed is used commercially by the pharmaceutical industry in throat lozenges and cough mixtures and in drugs to mask undesirable flavours.

Storage
Aniseed oil should be stored in a cool, dry area until it is used. Once opened, refrigeration and tightly closing the cap will prolong its shelf life.

To loosen up and liquefy mucous and for the temporary relief of dry or bronchial cough, sinusitis and the symptoms of hay fever and congested head colds; use Aniseed in a massage oil and massage into chest and back or use by way of steam inhalation.
